Emotional Trauma and Recovery
Emotional trauma occurs when an external threat overwhelms a person’s internal and external positive coping resources (SAMSHA). An estimated 60 percent of adults in the United States experience an adverse life event (trauma) at least once in their lives. When unaddressed, people who experienced trauma can face poor health outcomes, such as mental health problems and addition, increased risk of health problems and suicide.
Trauma-informed care is an approach to engaging people with histories of trauma that recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in their lives. Staff will receive education about how trauma affects individuals seeking services, what trauma-informed care is, how to create safe environments for persons served, and ways to avoid re-traumatizing practices.
Attendees will improve their understanding of:
The Emotional Trauma and Recovery training is a pre-requisite to attending the Trauma Train-the-Trainer workshop and becoming a Trauma Trainer.

- Review of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) study and the impact of trauma through the life span
- The impact of trauma work on staff and organizations
- Organizational strategies for trauma-informed care
- The stages of recovery and treatment interventions for trauma recovery
The Emotional Trauma and Recovery training is a pre-requisite to attending the Trauma Train-the-Trainer workshop and becoming a Trauma Trainer.
