Trauma or Drama? Resiliency Strategies for Traumatized Youth
Sometimes it is difficult to discern if a youth has trauma or typical teen drama. Emotional trauma occurs when an external threat overwhelms a person’s internal and external positive coping resources (SAMSHA). An estimated 60 percent of adults in the United States experience an adverse life event (trauma) at least once in their lives. When unaddressed, people who experienced trauma can face poor health outcomes, such as mental health problems and addiction, increased risk of health problems and suicide.
Trauma-informed care is an approach to engaging people with histories of trauma that recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in their lives. Staff will receive education about how trauma affects children and youth, what trauma-informed care is, how to create safe environments for youth in our care, and ways to avoid re-traumatizing practices. Specific hands-on tools and strategies will be discussed to help staff engage youth and support emotional self-regulation. Trauma specific age-appropriate interventions and recovery resources will be shared.
Attendees will improve their understanding of:
